Paris 2024: Tainá Henckel clinches Brazil's 2nd women's surfing spot
Brazil has secured its second Olympic spot in women's surfing for Paris 2024 with Tainá Henckel's qualification at the ISA (International Surfing Association) World Surfing Games in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.
Tainá advanced to the next round on Thursday (Feb. 29), the sixth day of the event, securing one of the eight women's spots in the team competition. In April last year, Surfer Tatiana Weston-Webb secured the first women's spot in Paris.
With this achievement, Brazil now has a total of 157 places in the Paris Games. This number could increase as the ISA Games men's competition continues, with Brazil still in the running to secure a third spot. Filipe Toledo and João Chianca have already won two spots.
On Thursday (29), in the main bracket, three-time world champion Gabriel Medina advanced to the next round, with the best score of the day (8.67) in Arecibo. Yago Dora didn't do well and fell to a playoff. Two-time world champion Filipe Toledo, on the other hand, excelled on the waves of Margara Reef in the playoff, advancing with a score of 13.70.
The World Surfing Games, the final competition awarding places for Paris 2024, will continue until Sunday (3). The team competition features representatives from over 50 countries.
