Brazil's external accounts closed out April at a $412 million surplus, according to Central Bank data released on Tuesday (May 24). This has been the first positive result since April 2009, when the balance of current transactions—purchases and sales of goods and services and the country's income transfers with the rest of the world—totaled $125 million.

In the same month of 2015, the balance of current accounts was a negative $6.842 billion.

Considering the period from January to April this year, there was a $7.166 billion deficit, as against -$31.941 billion in the same period in 2015.
