In a statement made Monday (Aug 28), Brazilian President Michel Temer said he hopes the Chinese government as well as Chinese companies to take part in Brazil's efforts to grant 57 projects to the private enterprise unveiled last week, which include the sale of publicly owned companies, airports and transmission lines, in addition to mixed public-private partnerships. In an interview with Chinese TV channel CCTV, Temer highlighted the importance of BRICS—the bloc formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The Brazilian president is landing in China this Tuesday to take part in the yearly BRICS meeting. He is also to be welcomed by Chinese President Xi Jinping. “I want to bring him the news regarding the 57 sectors we're about to grant to the private enterprise, and we hope that China may become interested in these concessions,” Temer declared.

In the interview, Temer said that the BRICS has grown stronger and that the governments of Brazil and China are similar in that they are both “reformist.” “I don't see signs that [the bloc] is becoming any weaker. On the contrary, what I see are gestures of strength. China and Brazil are reform-oriented countries that have carried out significant internal overhauls.”

The president went on to describe the labor reform, to be brought into effect in November, as “an extraordinary success,” as it labor relations more flexible and “fights unemployment.” “We have other overhauls ahead of us, like the pension reform, which is of the utmost importance for our country. This is a reform-oriented government, as is the case with China. China, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, and India are more on less on the same path.”

In addition to privatization, Temer talked about his plans to stimulate tourism between the two countries. “I hope tourism can grow, because Brazilian tourism in China is larger than its Chinese counterpart in Brazil. Brazilians are greatly interested in China's millenia-old culture. What we want is to encourage Chinese tourism in Brazil.”
