Workers' Party outraged at Senator Marta Suplicy's disaffiliation
The ruling Workers' Party (PT) issued a statement on Tuesday (Apr. 28) to express the party “outrage” at a letter by São Paulo Senator Marta Suplicy, in which she said she was quitting the party because she could no longer “put up with corruption.”
The note says the party “was outraged at Senator Marta Suplicy's letter communicating her decision to leave. Despite the reasons she listed, we believe that the real reasons behind her disaffiliation are the Senator's political ambition and excessively personal motivations that could no longer be satisfied within our ranks. So, she decided to look for a place in other parties.”
In the text – signed by PT Chairman Rui Falcão, and the state and local chairmen in São Paulo, Emidio de Souza and Paul Fiorilo – the party claimed it has never restricted the Senator's partisan or parliamentary activities and noted that Suplicy was welcomed by the party members and leadership, and has been elected Federal Deputy, Mayor, Senator, and twice appointed Minister.
“Deplorably, the Senator repaid the trust PT placed on her over the years with unethical conduct and groundless accusations. By denying her own past and dishonoring her position, Marta Suplicy is disrespecting the activism that she has always supported and venting her anger for not having been the choice of the party to run for mayor of São Paulo in 2012,” the statement said.
In its statement, PT says the Senator lacked consistency and acted opportunistically. “Finally, it is sad to find that the Senator has disregarded the consistency that she used to have as a principle as a PT member and went in line – opportunistically – with those whom she used to confront and who have always attacked her.”
Marta Suplicy had been a member of the party since 1981.
