Lawmaker Tereza Cristina, 64, of the Democrats party (DEM), will be the first female minister in Jair Bolsonaro’s government. The president-elect confirmed the appointment on his social media. Tereza Cristina will be in charge of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The ministry will not be merged with the Environment Ministry, as previously announced. However, the president-elect is likely to pick a name approved by the farming caucus to take the helm of Environment.

An agricultural engineering and an executive, Tereza Cristina is chairwoman with the Agricultural Parliament Front, and boasts a long career in the field. This year, she was one of the leaders backing Bill 6.299, which makes the rules for the monitoring and use of pesticides more flexible.
