Brazil’s Rayssa Leal, Filipe Toledo nominated for Laureus Awards
Skateboarder Rayssa Leal and surfer Filipe Toledo, both from São Paulo, have been nominated, for the second consecutive year, for the Laureus Award, the most important award in sports. Both will compete in one of the award's eight categories: best action sports athlete, along with four other nominees representing the United States, South Africa, England, and Australia.
Brazil is also represented in the "Sport for Good" category, specific to social sports programs aimed at transforming the lives of children and adolescents. The Brazilian program "Bola pra Frente," founded by Jorginho, a four-time world soccer champion, is among the six nominees in this category. The winners of the 25th edition of the Laureus Awards will be announced on April 22 during a ceremony at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid, Spain.
The Brazilians were recognized for their performance over the past year. Rayssa, 16, was the world champion in street skateboarding and also won the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. In 2023, Filipinho became the first Brazilian to win back-to-back world surfing championships and the Champions Tour (CT), which brings together the elite of the sport.
A total of 48 athletes have been nominated across the eight Laureus categories. The nominees will be evaluated by a jury consisting of 69 sports personalities, including renowned athletes, Olympic medalists, and world record holders.
