Residents of Rio de Janeiro and tourists who pass in front of Maracanã stadium, from now on will be passing through King Pelé Avenue, originally called Castelo Branco Avenue, a tribute to the first president of the military dictatorship established in Brazil in 1964. Signs with the new street name were installed on Wednesday (Jan. 4) after a decision made by city mayor Eduardo Paes.
Besides being the stage for Pelé's thousandth goal, in 1969, against Vasco, Maracanã also hosted the two matches in which Santos won the inter-club world championship, in 1962, against Benfica, and in 1963, against Milan.
Google Maps app is already updated with the new name of the avenue.
