The Brazilian animated film “Boy and the World”, directed by Alê Abreu from São Paulo, will represent Brazil in 2016 Oscar. In a ceremony held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the animated feature was announced in the shortlist films, along with the following animated films: Anomalisa, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and When Marnie was there.
“Boy and the World” tells the story of a boy who lives with his father and mother in a small house in the countryside. The father leaves home to the big city in search of work. The boy, sad and bewildered, packs his bags, takes the train, and leaves to discover the new world where his father lives. Through the child's eyes, the film shows a society marked by poverty, workers' exploitation, and lack of prospects.
Alê Abreu, film's director, is 44 years old and debuted in cinema with the animated film “Cosmic Boy”, released in 2007. The film “Boy and the World” won the 2014 award of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, in France, one of the most traditional festivals dedicated to the genre. As the film was shortlist for 2016 Oscar, it beat out films like “The Good Dinosaur”, “Home” and “Minions”.
