A total of 122 people from Afghanistan are waiting to be received at the Guarulhos International Airport, in the greater São Paulo area. According to Guarulhos city authorities, two cases of scabies have been identified among the refugees.

Officials said that municipal services provide emergency assistance to incoming Afghans with humanitarian visas. “At the airport, the city offers the refugees breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as water and blankets. Teams are ready to attend to any urgent needs, including health care and vaccination,” an official statement reads.

The 207 spots for shelters made available by the city and the 50 from the São Paulo state government are all occupied.

Medical care is offered by the region’s primary health care centers. Help with obtaining documents and Portuguese language courses are also given.

Continuous influx

Guarulhos Airport has been receiving an influx of refugees from Afghanistan since 2021, when the US withdrew its troops from the country after 20 years of occupation. At the time, the Taliban fundamentalist group took power again.
