Brazil, France celebrate extension of UN Decade of Action on Nutrition

Brazil and France celebrated the United Nations (UN) General Assembly’s decision to extend the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition for another five years. The foreign ministries of the two countries issued a joint statement Tuesday evening (Mar. 25).
The Decade of Action was due to end this year. “Aligning it with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” the extension “sustains political momentum at all levels and strengthens a unified effort to eradicate all forms of malnutrition by 2030,” the statement reads.
The French government is currently involved in organizing the Nutrition for Growth summit, which should seek political and financial commitments in favor of sustainable and healthy food for all. The event will take place in Paris on Thursday (27) and Friday (28).
France sees Brazil as a strategic partner in the quest for adequate nutrition and is among the signatories of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, unveiled during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2024 at Brazil’s initiative.
Brazil will be one of 76 countries to send representatives to Nutrition for Growth. It will be represented by First Lady Janja Lula da Silva.
“Malnutrition is a scourge that strikes every country in the world, with grave consequences, affecting nations’ human capital and development potential: 45 million children suffer from acute malnutrition and 150 million are plagued by chronic malnutrition. Overweight and obesity, as well as undernutrition in elderly people, are rapidly becoming more widespread,” the text signed by the two countries says.
