Official inflation at 0.67% in April
Inflation measured by the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) was 0.67% in April, the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute (IBGE) reported Friday (May 9). The figure reflects a 0.25% decrease from March (0.92%), but is still above the 0.55% recorded in April 2013.
This adds up to an accumulated 2.86% inflation for the first four months of the year, up from 2.5% reported in the same period in 2013. The annualized rate (total inflation for the past 12 months) is 6.28%, as against 6.15% in the preceding 12-month period, which is closer to the 6.50% target ceiling.
The primary contributing factors leading toward this inflation slowdown between March and April were food and beverages (down from 1.92% in March to 1.19% in April) and transport (from 1.38% to 0.32%).
Still, the food category reported the highest inflation figures (1.19%), and also the most impacting, contributing 0.30% percentage points of the monthly average 0.67%.
In the transport group, a 1.87% drop in air fares was notable following a 26.49% increase in the previous month.
Among the four categories reported with the largest inflation increases, Health and Personal Care stood out with 1.01% as against 0.43% in March, with medicines as the key inflationary drivers (1.84%).
