Measured by the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), Brazil's inflation closed out July showing a year to date change of 0.62%. The result is 0.17 percentage points lower than the change of 0.79% in June. With the high in July, the index for the first seven months increased 6.83%, which is above the rate of 3.76% for the same period 2014. It reports the highest index for the period January-July from 2003, when the year to date reported 6.85%.
The IPCA is the official inflation gauge, used by the government to measure its inflation targets and the prices changes based on the consumption of households with incomes between one and 40 times the minimum wage.
The data released Friday (Aug. 7) shows the highest change for July since 2004, when the inflation rate jumped 0.91%. In the 12-months, the index reached 9.56%, higher than the 12 previous months (8.89%). It's the highest year to date rate in 12 months since November 2003 (11.02%). In July 2014, the IPCA was 0.01%.
