Development minister expects trade resumption with Argentina
Development, Industry and Foreign Trade Minister Armando Monteiro said today (Dec. 10) that he believes in a trade resumption between Brazil and Argentina.
He pointed out that new Argentine President Mauricio Macri committed to removing protectionist barriers. "President Macri has already declared that they will be removed, but Argentina has exchange rate problems. It is not something to be solved just by the desire," declared the minister in an interview.
Speaking to the press after attending the Forum on Exports in São Paulo held by newspaper Estadão, Monteiro pointed out that the Brazilian government has "trust" in the Argentine economy to promote adjustments that will allow a "more fluid and revived" trade with Brazil. And he noted that, in recent years, bilateral trade with the Latin American country declined a lot.
"It has declined due to some processes related to the economic situation both in Brazil and Argentina. In the automotive sector, Brazilian exports have been mainly destined for Argentina, but in 2014 [trade] fell almost 36% compared with 2013. We expect both Brazil and Argentina to rebalance their economies so that we can expand our trade," said Monteiro.
He also commented on Macri statement to exclude the Venezuela Mercosur. According to the minister, the Argentine president's speech is already more moderate.
"Macri indicated that he would wait for the results of the election to evaluate it. And, in everyone's evaluation, the elections have been held aiming to achieve a legitimate result. So it seems to me that there are no reasons for requesting Venezuela's exclusion from MERCOSUR," he stated.
