Effective as of January 1st, 2016, the minimum monthly wage in Brazil will be R$880 ($224.57). The amount was established by a decree signed today (Dec. 29) by President Dilma Rousseff, and reflects a 11.6% increase from the current R$788 ($201.09).

The change is a continuation of the federal government's policy of increasing the value of the minimum wage, and will be felt by about 40 million workers and retirees who currently earn the national wage floor, according to a statement issued by the presidential office, Palácio do Planalto.

According to the latest census conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2010, 46.34% of people aged 10 years or older earned up to two times the minimum wage, whereas the percentage of people aged 10 years or older who earned 5 times the minimum wage or more was a mere 5.26%.
