The economic crisis was caused by fiscal imbalances rather than the country's political situation, Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles said on Tuesday (Jun 7). He called on lawmakers for commitment and said the economy will not pick up unless the economic measures pursued by the government are passed by Congress.

“The economic crisis was caused by the fiscal crisis and can only be solved through fiscal policy. We will continue our regular work. I believe that if timely measures are adopted, and we believe that the Congress will do so, Brazil will certainly grow again within the growth potential it deserves and has and will create jobs again,” the minister said.

Meirelles said the government is working to enable economic recovery as quickly as possible, noting that tax revenue will only increase again when Congress passes a bill to cap increase in public spending, which will revive confidence in Brazil's economy.

Regarding the state debt restructuring, the minister said he has received a proposal but will not make a counter-offer until he has had the opportunity to meet with the economic team and the state governors. A meeting with governors is due to take place this Thursday (9).
