Percentage of indebted families hits record-low since 2012
The percentage of Brazilian families in debt closed out 2016 in 56.6%, the lowest level since May 2012, according to figures from December in the Survey on Consumers' Indebtedness and Insolvency (PEIC), released today (Dec. 21) by the National Trade Confederation (CNC). In November this year, the rate stood at 57.3%. In december, 2015, indebtedness reached 61.1%.
The survey also showed a decline in the percentage of insolvents, i.e., people in debt or having bills overdue, which closed out the year at 23%. The value is lower than the 23.4% reported in November this year and the 23.2% from December 2015.
The proportion of families who did not manage to clear their debts or pay their bills ended 2016 at 8.7%, the same as December 2015.
Despite the drop in the indicators, the percentage of people who regard themselves as severely indebted hiked from 13.5% in December 2015 to 13.8% in December this year. Most debts (77.1%) stem from consumers' credit cards.
