The Brazilian government reported this week it is considering the construction of six nuclear plants by 2050. The information was given by Reive Barros, secretary for Energy Development and Planning Secretary of the Mines and Energy Ministry.
The move is likely to be included in the country’s National Energy Plan (PNE), currently in its final stage of development. The ministry estimates investments to total $30 billion for building the plants.
New ballasts should produce six gigawatts of energy, one gigawatt each. Coupled with the production from existing plants Angra 1 and 2, plus Angra 3—to be concluded in 2026—the installed power of the country’s energy matrix may reach 9.3 gigawatts.
