As of May 9, Volkswagen employees in Brazil will be put on collective vacation for 20 days at São Bernardo do Campo plant in São Paulo, due to the lack of semiconductors.

Although the automaker has not informed the number of employees involved, the Metalworkers Union of São Bernardo do Campo says they are around 2,500 workers. The factory currently produces about 800 vehicles a day.

The general coordinator of the union's representation at Volkswagen José Roberto Nogueira da Silva has pointed out that the agreement signed between the union and the factory guarantees predictability in crisis situations.

“We are using all the flexibility tools discussed in the agreement signed by the union. This agreement covers good and bad times, and gives both the factory and workers predictability and certain tranquility to go through moments like this,” he said.

The union representative has also reinforced that the situation is similar to what is happening in other factories and that there is a demand for production, but the scarcity of parts makes service unfeasible. “We are looking forward to the resumption as soon as possible,” he added.

In March and April, Mercedes-Benz also put workers at the São Bernardo do Campo plant in São Paulo on collective vacations, due to the lack of electronic components. Employees stayed out of the automaker from March 14 to 25, and from April 18 to May 3. The union reported that in March 1,200 workers were affected by the measure and in April, 5,000.
