Brazil generated 278,639 jobs in August this year—the difference between 2,051,800 admissions and 1,773,161 dismissals in the formal labor market. Year to date, the balance stands at 1,853,298 new formal workers. The data were released today (Sep 29) by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

Formal employment saw an increase across all 27 states, which brought formal posts in the country to 42,531,653 in August, up 0.66 percent from the previous month.

Also in August, the balance was positive for employment across all five groups: services, industry, trade, construction, and farming.

Labor Minister José Carlos Oliveira noted this is the third month in which the industrial sector has seen a growth in hiring, which helps raise people’s income.

“This means we’re resuming the movement in Brazilian industry. This is important because it brings added value to our products and will also raise Brazilians’ average salary. Industry, as a rule, requires better qualifications. Consequently, as the sector grows, the average salary ends up rising as well,” he explained.
