Brazil took the podium for the second time at the World Weightlifting Championship, held in Tashkent (Uzbekistan). This Thursday (16), Amanda Schott won the bronze in the 87 kg category in the snatch test, where the athlete raises the bar to above his head at once, without supporting it on his body.

Amanda raised the bar first with 102 kilos, and then with 106. In the third and last attack, the Brazilian could not validate the move with 109 kilos, which could earn her silver, as it was the mark achieved by Ankhtsetseg Munkhjantsan, from Mongolia, who came in second. The gold went to Uzbek Tursunoy Jabborova, who lifted 106 kilos.

“I'm mega, ultra, absurdly happy. It's only my second international competition and it's my first Worlds. Without a doubt, my posture here was, by far, my best of all the championships I've participated in. I'm very happy to represent the Brazilian team and winning the medal is unbelievable. It's just the beginning, I still have a lot of history to write”, celebrated the researcher to the Brazilian Confederation of Weight Lifting (CBLP).

“We thought it would be possible in the 81 kg category, but she asked [to compete in] 87 kg and she fought really well and managed to concentrate on the competition. It's a sensational result for someone who made the first competition of this size in his life”, added coach Dragos Stanica, also to CBLP.

Unlike the Olympics, where only the sum of the results of the snatch and the throw (when the crossbar raises the bar at shoulder height, then above the head and waits for the referees to release it) is taken into account, at the Worlds awards are separate. In the throw, Amanda was in fifth place, moving 130 kilos, five less than the Russian Dariia Akhmerova, bronze medalist. Mongolian Ankhtsetseg and Norwegian Solfrid Koanda lifted the same 141 kilograms, but the European was ahead by the tiebreaker criteria.

Overall (start plus pitch), the Brazilian was also in fifth place, with 236 kilos in total. Ankhtsetseg won gold (250 kg), Uzbek Jabborova (244 kg) won silver and Norwegian Koanda (244 kg) won bronze.

On Tuesday (14), Laura Amaro had already been world runner-up in the 76 kg category, also in the sprint, placing fourth in the throw and overall. The medal was the first by a Brazilian in the history of the competition.

Before Laura and Amanda, only Fernando Reis had won a medal in a World Cup among Brazilian pessists. In 2018, he inherited two bronzes (snatch and general) after Uzbek Rustam Djangabaev was caught doping and had third place in both disputes. Currently, Fernando himself is suspended for doping, caught in a test carried out in May, which cost him his participation in the Tokyo Olympics (Japan).
