Former football star Edson Arantes do Nascimento, or Pelé, as he is mostly known, was discharged from São Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital, where he has been treating a colon cancer. He had the tumor extracted on September 4.
In a post on his social media, the king of football wrote: “I'm sharing a picture of me smiling for a reason. As I had promised, I’m spending Christmas with my family. I’m going back home. Thank you for all the kind words.”
On December 9, Pelé had announced he had undergone “short chemotherapy sessions,” earlier in the month, and that he would run a few more tests since he was hospitalized.
In a statement released Thursday, the hospital staff reported the state of the onetime athlete “is stable,” adding he “will continue the treatment of the colon tumor, identified in September this year.”
