Brazil closes Paralympic Swimming World Championships with 46 podiums
The Paralympic Swimming World Championships held in Manchester (England) came to an end on Sunday (Aug. 6). On the last day of competitions, the Brazilian team won 5 more medals (2 gold and 3 bronze), closing the event with a total of 46 medals (16 gold, 11 silver, and 19 bronze), guaranteeing the fourth place in the final classification.
"Our participation was extraordinary. Out of the 29 athletes, 25 won medals, with 11 of them securing gold. This shows that we are on the right track and that the work has been paying off. The strategy indicates a successful trajectory for the next competitions. Our expectations for the Paris Paralympic Games are very positive," stated Mizael Conrado, the head of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB).
Brazil's last two gold medals were won by Mariana Gesteira, in the 50-meter freestyle class S9 (physical-motor limitation) with a time of 27s70, and by the world record holder in the 100-meter butterfly class S14 (intellectual disability) Gabriel Bandeira, who completed the race in 54s64.
In addition, Carol Santiago clinched her eighth medal in the competition. She took bronze in the 200-meter medley SM13. Susana Schnarndorf also finished third, but in the 100 meters S3 (physical-motor limitation). The last Brazilian medal won this year was bronze in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay 34 points with Mariana Gesteira, Cecília Araújo, Talisson Glock, and Phelipe Rodrigues.
