The rebellion that broke out in the State Penitentiary of Cascavel, in the southern state of Paraná was over by Tuesday morning (Aug 26), after inmates were transferred and the hostages released. The Military Police confirmed the death of 5 prisoners. Of the 25 wounded, eight are still hospitalized.
The riot started early on Sunday morning (24). Detainees were complaining about food, the relationship with members of the prison administration and strict visiting rules.
Approximately 80% of the prison facilities were damaged, and 851 inmates were moved. The two penitentiary agents held as hostages were released at around 3 pm.
The Penitentiary of Cascavel is capable of housing 1,116 detainees, and lodged 1,038 inmates when the uprising erupted.
