36 suspects indicted in Operation Car Wash
Federal Prosecutors (MPF) have charged 36 people investigated as part of phase 7 of Operation Car Wash on Thursday (Dec. 11). The accused include former Petrobras Downstream Director Paulo Roberto Costa, currency dealer Alberto Youssef, and 22 executives and employees of construction groups including Mendes Junior, GFD, Camargo Corrêa, UTC, OAS, Engevix, and Galvão Engenharia.
Once the court case is opened, the defendants will face trial for bribery, money laundering and currency drain reported by the Federal Police to amount to $3 billion. Part of this amount consists of funds embezzled from contracts of the construction groups with Petrobras.
In a news conference on Thursday, Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot said the task of finding out about all wrongdoing “takes time” and that the MPF will provide all needed assistance with the investigations. He has also said that the accused have “stolen the pride from all Brazilians”.
Janot went on to say that indicting the implicated contractor executives is just the beginning of the case. “We still have a long way to go [about the investigations]. This is just another phase – the facts are intricate, but we can responsibly and firmly affirm that we're going all the way,” he said.
