Brazilian commander of UN mission in Haiti dies

Army General José Luiz Jaborandy Jr., Force Commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), died during his flight back to Brazil yesterday (Aug. 30), at age 57.
His family reported Jaborandy had a heart attack while on board a flight bound for Manaus, Amazonas, where he was to meet his month-old granddaughter for the first time.
Having joined the army in 1976, the general took over the MINUSTAH in March 2014. Before serving in Haiti, Jaborandy was a commander of the 8th Military Region in Belém, Pará. He also had roles as a military observer for the United Nations Observer Group in Central America (ONUCA) in 1991, and for the United Nations Observer Mission in El Salvador in 1992.
