Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot charged the lower house speaker, Eduardo Cunha, and Senator and ex-President Fernando Collor at the Supreme Court (STF in the original acronym), Antonio Cruz/Agência Brasil

Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot charged the lower house speaker, Eduardo Cunha, and Senator and ex-President Fernando Collor at the Supreme Court (STF in the original acronym), on Thursday (Aug. 20), for the crimes of corruption and money laundering. These are the first complaints filed against the congressmen investigated under Operation Car Wash.

Among the allegations against Cunha is a statement by Júlio Camargo's – former consultant for Toyo Setal firm – as part of a whistleblower deal in Operation Car Wash. In July, he informed judge Sergio Moro, responsible for Operation Car Wash procedures, that Cunha asked for $5 million in kickbacks to secure drillship contracts with Petrobras.

Collor is under investigation due to $7.48 million received in bribes for contracts with BR Distribuidora, a Petrobras subsidiary.

Collor was also targeted by Operation Car Wash at the crackdowns known as “Politeia” that seized three luxury cars – a Lamborghini, a Ferrari and a Porsch – in the former president's residence.

Minister Teori Zavascki will be responsible for examining the charges and deciding whether the evidence submitted is enough to begin criminal proceedings against the accused. On Wednesday (Aug. 18), Zavascki had denied Eduardo Cunha's request to suspend the criminal proceedings in which he was cited by the whistleblower in Operation Car Wash. There are no set dates for the beginning of the trial.
