Felt air temperature above 44 °C in Rio
The intense heat in Rio as summer comes has got the city's hotspot beaches packed on Sunday (Dec. 27). Street thermometers showed over 30 °C in the morning, and by midday, at some points, temperatures hit nearly 40 °C.
The local government's weather service, Alerta Rio, reported a peak 40°C at 1:15 pm. However, the peak temperature feel was recorded for Barra da Tijuca and Riocentro neighborhoods—44.4 °C.
The fancy beaches of Copacabana, Leme, Ipanema and Leblon, south Rio, were bustling with bathers, bikers looking for cycle paths and leisure lane closures, and stand-up paddlers, who are now part of the beach landscape.
On Thursday (Dec. 31), when the crowds flock to Copacabana Beach for the New Year celebration, the local weather is expected to be partly cloudy, but rain is unlikely. The beginning of summer and the holiday season typically draw large numbers of tourists to the city. According to the state government, about 565,000 visitors are expected to board off ships in Rio between November this year and April next year, 15% up from 2014-2015.
