The National Traffic Council (CONTRAN) has authorized foreign nationals from 102 countries to drive vehicles in Brazil during and around the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The decision, officially published today (Feb. 29), applies to the period from July 1st through December 31.

In order to drive in Brazil, the foreign visitors will be required to hold valid driving licenses from their home countries, and will be subject to Brazil's traffic laws.

There is an existing driving permission for license-holding nationals from countries that have ratified international conventions or agreements in place with Brazil, with permissions applying on a mutual basis. This means Brazilian nationals are also authorized to drive their applicable licensed vehicle categories in those countries for a maximum period of 180 days within the period covered by their driving licenses.

The Convention on Road Traffic is an international agreement that sets out the rules that must be observed by all vehicle drivers when they travel abroad.
