Brazil Federal Police investigate attack on indigenous people

Brazil's Justice Ministry on Monday (May 1) ordered deployments of federal police officers to the Bahia village in Viana, Maranhão, where at least 13 members of the Gamela indigenous people were injured.
Men armed with machetes and firearms attacked the village, which is located in an area disputed by local ranchers, according to the Indian Missionary Council (CIMI).
According to CIMI, two Gamela individuals were grazed by bullets on their faces, and have been discharged from hospital. The others are still hospitalized. One of them had a hand hacked off and had his knee cut, a bullet lodged in his spine and another in a rib. The injured indigenous people received care at a hospital in the state capital, São Luís.
The identities of the attackers have not been confirmed. After the attack was reported, state military police forces were deployed in the area.
