Social movements staged the 10th Marcha Nacional da Cidadania pela Vida, a march against the legalization of drugs and abortion. The protest, held Tuesday (May 30) in Brasília, started outside the National Library downtown and headed for the National Congress. The rally aimed to draw the attention of both the population and the Supreme Court justices about the consequences of making drugs and abortion legal.

Under Brazilian law, abortion is a crime. The procedure is only legal if women are raped, face life risks, or carry an anencephalic baby.

Lenise Garcia, head of the Movimento Nacional da Cidadania pela Vida, the main association behind the march, said the organizations want to encourage people to express their opinion against the legalization of abortion, currently under deliberation at the Brazilian Supreme Court.
