Brazil’s Ministry of Justice extended the deadline for foreigners with IDs expiring as of March 16, 2020, to regularize their position. Expired documents will be accepted provided that the immigrant has been a resident in the country and seeks to update their status by September 16, 2021.

The extension is to become effective on March 15. “Service protocols for migratory rectification, national migratory records and other documents linked to the activities of the Immigration Police, produced by the Federal Police, expiring as of March 16, 2020, must be accepted as valid for all intents and may be used until September 16, 2021, also for the purposes of entry, registration, renewal, or change of deadline,” the regulation reads.

The extension does not apply to document holders traveling overseas for a period longer than 30 days.

The regulation stipulates that, should a visitor’s exit from Brazil be hindered within the term set for their stay due to restrictions imposed by a third-party country, they may request the extraordinary postponement of their departure even if the date is beyond the limits of the migratory year.
