Book sales in the country until November already surpass those of 2020
The 11th Panel of Book Retail in Brazil, carried out by Nielsen BookScan and released by the National Union of Book Publishers (SNEL), shows that sector sales grew 33.03% in volume and 31.14% in value in the accumulated of January to November this year, compared to the same period in 2020.
The result surpasses the performance of the whole of last year, when 41.9 million copies were sold, with revenue of R$ 1.74 billion. In the accumulated so far, retail registered 43.9 million books sold in 2021, with sales of BRL 1.83 billion, against 32.99 million units sold in the same period in 2020, generating revenue of BRL 1.39 billion.
For the president of SNEL, Marcos da Veiga Pereira, the study represents the optimism that the Brazilian and world markets are experiencing. According to Pereira, the social isolation imposed by the new coronavirus pandemic favored the encounter of readers with the literature and boosted sales this year, confirming that the market is expanding.
In an interview with Agência Brasil , Marcos Pereira emphasized that the result obtained so far “is spectacular''. “We had no idea that we would be able to maintain growth throughout the year, in these months now, when we were selling a lot of books last year. And we continue to sell more than in the past, with a forecast to close 2021 close to 25%”. He believes the curve will continue to rise in 2022, but not at this level. “But if we manage to continue growing at rates more similar to something between 5% and 10%, I will be very happy, because we will be in a robust market that continues to grow”, he comments.
Resilience
According to the survey, the high variation verified this year, until November, results from two different moments in the book market: in 2020, a market hit by restrictive measures to contain the transmission of covid-19 and, in 2021, a book sector more consolidated and resilient.
The president of SNEL recalled that in the first half of this year, there was a second strong wave of covid, which led several stores to close yet. "I don't think that's going to happen in 2022." At the same time, he pointed out that there is a great uncertainty, or uncertainty, about how the elections and the Brazilian general scenario can contribute negatively to the sector, in some way. "So, I believe that we need to continue to generate good news, so that reading remains on the rise and people remain interested in reading."
The average price per copy practiced in the first 11 months of this year, in the order of R$ 41.64, presented a reduction of 1.42% in relation to the average value registered from January to November 2020 (R$ 42.24).
Panel data is collected directly from the “cash” of bookstores, e-commerce and collaborating retailers. Information is received electronically in database format and, after processing, the data is sent 'online' and updated weekly. Nielsen BookScan is the first book sales monitoring service in the world, it operates in ten countries, and the result of its work contributes to the decision-making process of publishers. The SNEL publishes the Brazilian Book Sales Panel every four weeks.
