After two years away as a result of the pandemic, SESC, a private institution that provides services for Brazilian workers and their families, is bringing to the public the third edition of the Festival Arte da Palavra, or Farpa. Staged in the historic city of Paraty, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, the event focuses on Brazilian literature and welcomes visitors free of charge from July 21 to 23.

The gathering is aimed at “anyone interested in discovering both new and consolidated voices in Brazilian literature,” SESC literature specialist Diogo Borges told Agência Brasil.

The festival is part of the institution’s eponymous project, a major literary circuit bringing 140 artists on over 520 activities all over the country, including creative writing workshops, debates, poetry readings, and other performances.

Farpa’s opening ceremony will start at 2 pm Thursday (Jul 21) at SESC Santa Rita, in Paraty. On Saturday (23), activities should begin at 4 pm. The event, Borges went on to add, serves as “a showcase featuring the artists touring under Arte da Palavra this year.”

Among the names expected to attend are novelist and short story writer Marcelino Freire, from Pernambuco state; poet Sony Ferseck, from Roraima, joined by Paraty poet Elisa Pereira for a debate; and São Paulo booktuber Tamy Ghannam.
