New Year’s Eve in Copacabana to welcome six cruise ships, 300 boats

Rio de Janeiro’s port authority has granted permission for six cruise ships to anchor off Copacabana beach, South Rio, as part of New Year’s festivities. In addition, 2 to 3 hundred smaller vessels—such as sports, nautical tourism, and passenger transport boats—should be inspected so they can also anchor close to the beach.

Boat owners interested in participating in the festival must request an inspection from the port authority. Inspections will be carried out until December 30. 

“This inspection will involve checking documents, safety items, and compliance with the capacity of each boat,” Rio de Janeiro’s port captain, Commander Luciano Calixto pointed out.

On December 31, before approaching Copacabana, boat drivers will be subjected to breathalyzer tests. Commander Calixto reported. “Drivers will receive a zero-alcohol bracelet and the boat will be allowed to sail,” he added.

The port authority will also inspect the ten ferries responsible for the fireworks display, which will last 12 minutes starting midnight. The vessels will be closest to the beach, after which the tugs and support boats will be positioned, followed by Navy vessels. Further on, the smaller boats will be stationed and, further away from the beach, the six cruise ships authorized to approach will be positioned.
