MERCOSUR presidents want trade agreement with EU
The presidents of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela met today (July 17) at the 48th Summit of Heads of State of MERCOSUR and Associated States in Brasília. Among other topics, they discussed negotiations for a trade agreement with the European Union, and the renewal of the Structural Convergence Fund for MERCOSUR (FOCEM). Also attending were the presidents of Guyana and Bolivia, which is in the process of acceding to the bloc.
Before the summit, President Dilma Rousseff had a bilateral meeting with President of Guyana, David Granger, and later welcomed the presidents of Bolivia (Evo Morales); Uruguay (Tabaré Vázquez); Paraguay (Horacio Cartes); Argentina (Cristina Kirchner); and Venezuela (Nicolás Maduro).
The Summit of Heads of State in Brasília is the closing event of Brazil's rotating presidency over MERCOSUR in the first half of 2015. Paraguay takes over for the next six-month period.
