Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court on Thursday (Apr. 7) approved the installation of new polling stations outside the headquarters of Brazilian embassies and consulates abroad. The new locations will be established in 21 countries, to serve Brazilians eligible to vote in the October elections.

The expansion had been requested to the electoral court authorities by the Ministry of Foreign Relations. In certain locations, the ministry reported, embassy facilities are not appropriate to accommodate the number of voters. Approximately 605 thousand Brazilians outside the country are eligible to vote. Brazilian nationals living abroad may only vote for president.

The first round of the elections will be held on October 2, when voters go to the polls to choose the president, governors, senators, and federal, state, and district representatives. A possible second round of presidential and state government elections will take place on October 30.
