Brazil: pro-coup acts of January 8, 225 more rioters indicted
Brazil’s Attorney General's Office (PGR) denounced Monday (Jan. 30) to the Supreme Court another 225 people under investigation for participating in the anti-democratic acts of January 8. This is the sixth time the prosecutor's office has filed indictments, which now total 479 people indicted.
Accused of criminal association and incitement to animosity of the Armed Forces against the Three Powers (Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary), the indicted were arrested at the campsite in front of the Army Headquarters, in Brasilia, and are now being held in units of the Federal District's prison system.
According to the coordinator of the Strategic Group for Combating Anti-Democratic Acts, assistant attorney general Carlos Frederico Santos, the campsite had "evident structure to guarantee perenniality, stability, and permanence" of the protesters who defended the seizure of power.
The Attorney General's Office has demanded that those involved in the acts pay compensation for collective moral damages.
Since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was elected in a second round of voting in late October, supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro have demonstrated their discontent with the outcome of the election and called for a military coup in the country to overthrow the democratically elected government.
The demonstrations included encampments in front of several headquarters in the country and culminated with the invasion and depredation of the headquarters of the three Branches of Power, in Brasilia, on January 8.
