Rosa Weber accepts appointment to Mercosur Review Court
Former Federal Supreme Court minister Rosa Weber has accepted President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's nomination to serve as an arbitrator on the Permanent Court of Review of Mercosur, comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
She is expected to fill the seat vacated by Ricardo Lewandovski when he assumed the position of Brazil’s Justice Minister in February of this year. Lewandovski joined the Permanent Court of Review in July 2023 and assumed its presidency this year.
Rosa Weber's nomination is still pending approval by the Southern Common Market Council.
Established in 2002 and headquartered in Asuncion, Paraguay, the Mercosur Court, as it is known, aims to settle disputes among member countries of the bloc when prior negotiations fail, and the nations opt to submit the matters for adjudication by this arbitral body.
The court comprises five arbitrators, with one appointed by each of the States Parties, and a fifth judge appointed unanimously by all countries. Additionally, there is an alternate for each arbitrator. The term of office for court members is two years.
