Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has sanctioned a law on the use of bio-supplies in agriculture. The text defines bio-supplies as items or processes of biological origin used in the production, processing, or storage of products from agriculture, water-based production, or planted forests.

These supplies can be used on crops and livestock to help them grow and combat pests and diseases, making them a healthier and more sustainable alternative to the chemical-based supplies traditionally used in farming.

The text outlines the production, import, export, registration, marketing, use, inspection, and supervision of bio-supplies. It also deals with research, packaging, advertising, transportation, storage, fees, the provision of services, the disposal of waste and packaging, and production incentives.

Senator Jaques Wagner, who had been rapporteur for the bill in the Senate, celebrated the sanctioned text and said on his social networks that bio-supplies enable the production of healthier food.

“This law is the result of an in-depth democratic debate and, above all, a collective construction that favors the deconcentration of markets, the strengthening of the regional economy, and associated production. It brings along with it gains for agricultural sciences, the biological sciences, and the health of the entire population, with healthier food. Producers, rural workers, the environment, and, of course, consumer families also win,” the senator declared.
