Brazil will host the 15th Conference of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP15), a United Nations global forum, scheduled for March 23 to 29, 2026. The event will take place in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul state.

At the meeting, leaders and heads of state will discuss the revision of the global treaty on wildlife and habitat conservation, along with new proposals to enhance ecological connectivity and address the threats of extinction facing migratory species such as whales, sharks, rays, freshwater fish, turtles, birds, among others.

According to Amy Fraenkel, the executive secretary of the convention from the UN Environment Program (UNEP), choosing a country as biodiverse as Brazil, particularly the city of Campo Grande, presents a unique opportunity to strengthen international cooperation and implement transformative measures. “Migratory animals connect the planet, crossing continents, oceans, and skies on incredible journeys each year, but they are facing unprecedented pressures,” she stated.

The climate crisis poses a significant risk to wildlife, threatening the functioning of ecosystems, as migratory species serve as key indicators of environmental health.

For Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, holding the COP15 conference in the Pantanal underscores Brazil’s commitment to preserving biodiversity. “Amidst the current instability in multilateralism, I reaffirm Brazil’s strong intention to building a sustainable, fair, and inclusive future. I urge everyone to join efforts in making COP15 in the Pantanal a resounding success,” she said following the official announcement of the conference venue on Wednesday, March 26.
