Lower House head willing to testify in Petrobras congressional probe
The president of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies, Eduardo Cunha, said today (Mar 5) that he is ready to provide the Congressional Investigative Committee on Petrobras with any clarifications needed.
“Taking into consideration the information released about investigations involving the name of the president of the [Lower] House, I would like to declare to the members of the commission that this congressman is willing to come to this place and give any clarifications,” he stated.
His statement comes as a response to allegations that his name figures on the list sent by Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot to the Federal Supreme Court, which names the politicians involved in the money laundering and bribery scheme brought under investigation as part of Operation Car Wash.
Last Tuesday (3), Janot asked Minister Teori Zavascki, rapporteur under the Supreme Court of Operation Car Wash, to launch 28 inquiries against 54 people, among whom Congress members who may only be brought to trial under the Supreme Court.
Cunha further announced Wednesday (4) that he has officially asked the Supreme Court for access to any investigation request possibly submitted by the Prosecutor-General's Office targeting him. “I believe it should have been made public anyway. It makes you wonder. I've already petitioned, in an attempt to know whether it's true, and what its content is,” he concluded. He promised to make the request known in case he finds a mention of his name.
