Ministry of Public Prosecution appeals to conviction of 4 indicted in Car Wash
The Ministry of Public Prosecution has appealed to the Federal Justice today (July 23) the conviction of former director of Petrobras Nestor Cerveró, businessman Fernando Soares (a.k.a. Fernando Baiano), consultant Júlio Camargo and currency dealer Alberto Youssef for the crimes of bribery and money laundering.
Investigated in the Operation Car Wash, by the Federal Police, the four suspected of involviment in the corruption scheme at Petrobras are in preventive detention.
In closing arguments – the last phase of the process before the judge sentence -, the federal prosecutors also appeal the third-party defendants to be sentenced to repay $90.3 million to public coffers – estimated amount of the loss caused by the oil company. They argue that a “massive criminal scheme” was set up by businessmen who paid kickback money to officials of the state-owned enterprise in order to ensure contracts to carry out projects and enterprises of their interest.
According to prosecutors, the board of directors of Petrobras were formed by political appointments to ensure the transfer of bribe to politicians. A financial core, which Fernando Baiano is accused of taking part, was in charge of passing on the amount deviated to recipients. To do so, they forged contracts for consulting services and emitted false invoices so that the scheme would not be detected by controlling systems.
