President Dilma Rousseff declared Monday (Aug. 10) that she will stand up against what she termed “free-for-all” against the government at any of its levels: federal, state, or municipal. “The target of the 'the worse, the better' policy ends up being no other than the population,” she argued.

During the ceremony in which homes were delivered as part of the My House My Life program, in São Luís, Maranhão, the Brazilian head of state once again mentioned that the government is facing a moment of adversity, which, she guaranteed, is temporary, adding that social programs are not to be interrupted.

“Periods of difficulty arouse uncertainty and apprehension among the people. There's no need to feel insecure or apprehensive. This is a temporary situation. It will pass—and it will pass quickly. Even as we go through [this], we will not leave the social programs behind,” she pointed out.

In her speech, the president asked the population to first think of the nation as a whole, and then of their parties and personal projects. “Brazil needs stability to make it through,” she said. “When there's a difficulty, there's no use in fighting each other, because it won't solve the problem,” she added.

During the ceremony, the keys to 4,467 homes were handed out in four cities: São Luís and Caxias, in the sate of Maranhão; and Campo Grande and Anastácio, in Mato Grosso do Sul. The housing units, designed to house families with an income of up to $458, are expected to benefit another 17 thousand people. Complete with two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a laundry room, each home is located near public transportation and served by the local electric grid, as well as sanitation and draining systems. At the end of the event, Rousseff confirmed the beginning of the third phase of the program, scheduled for September 10, when 3 million units should be announced.
