Congress begins review of 2014 government audit report
The Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) report recommending the rejection of the government accounts of 2014 began to be reviewed by Congress Tuesday (Oct. 20). The document was referred by the president of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, to the Joint Committee on Budget (CMO). They have 77 days to discuss the conclusions and report back endorsing or changing the rejection.
Calheiros had been expected to give the government another chance to argue a defense before referring the document to the committee, but that did not happen. The government can still speak out during the discussion by the CMO. Senator Rose de Freitas, chair of the committee, said she is already working to appoint a rapporteur, and the choice will be announced Wednesday (21).
After the committee review, the marked-up report will be forwarded to be voted at a joint session of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
