Congress maintains veto on retirees’ adjustment

Lower House maintained on Wednesday (Nov. 18) the veto on the adjustment in the retirement pension at the same rate of minimum wage. There were 211 votes against the veto, and 160 in favor. To override the veto, 257 votes were necessary.
Since the veto was approved by deputies, there was no need for senators to vote it. Thus, retirees and pensioners who receive more than the minimum wage will continue to have inflation deducted, with no real gain.
According to data presented by the government, to extend minimum wage deductions for pensions would represent an additional cost of almost $80 million in 2016. In Brazil, minimum wage is adjusted by a positive variation of the gross domestic product (GDP) from two years before over the National Index of Consumer Prices (INPC) from the previous year.
