Federal Police arrested lawyer Edson Ribeiro arriving from Miami at Rio's Galeão Airport in the early morning of Friday (Nov. 27). Ribeiro was the defense counsel for former Petrobras International Director Nestor Cerveró and was ordered to jail Wednesday (25) by the Supreme Court.

The lawyer is being investigated as part of an operation that has also led to the arrest of Senator Delcídio do Amaral, the senator's chief of staff, Diogo Ferreira, and André Esteves, owner of BTG bank. Supreme Court Justice Teori Zavascki had authorized Interpol to blacklist Ribeiro prior to his arrest.

The lawyer was involved in an attempted arrangement by Senator Amaral to prevent Cerveró from entering a plea bargain agreement with the Federal Prosecutor's Office. At a meeting with them, the senator offered to pay a monthy $13,200 for Cerveró's family so the former director would not become a whistleblower in Operation Car Wash.
