Former executive of contractor ruled to 19 years in jail
Federal Judge Sérgio Moro ruled Monday (Dec. 14) former vice-President of Engevix contractor Gerson Almada to 19 years in jail for the crimes of corruption and money laundering. According to investigations of Operation Car Wash, the contractor joined the bid-rigging cartel on contracts with the state-owned firm.
In the same ruling, Moro condemned currency dealer Alberto Youssef and former Petrobras Downstream Director Paulo Roberto Costa. However, since both investigated made the plea bargain, they will receive reduced sentences.
According to Moro, the bribe payments were made to currency dealer Alberto Youssef and former Petrobras Downstream Director Paulo Roberto Costa, even after Costa had left Petrobras in 2012.
During the investigation, Almada's defense admitted that he made payments to the corruption scheme of Petrobras, but argued that he had faced threats from former Petrobras Downstream Director Paulo Roberto Costa, in order to make the payments.
In the same ruling, Sérgio Moro acquitted three executives connected to Engevix, due to lack of evidence.
