In Brazil, acting president asks to speed up voting in Congress
Deputy Pauderney Avelino, leader of the Democratas Party in the Chamber of Deputies, said after attending the meeting of leaders at the Presidency that acting president Michel Temer looked very comfortable with his position and asked the leaders to speed up, "as much as possible, the voting on issues of interest to the country in order to show that the government is ruling and the Chamber is working. However, he understands that the Chamber of Deputies is facing internal problems."
Four provisional measures and three bills from the Executive branch have missed their deadlines for constitutional urgency and need to be voted before any other bill. The proposals had been signed by Dilma Rousseff and address issues of national interest like actions to combat the Aedes aegypti—the mosquito that transmits dengue and the Zika virus. Another measure to be voted earmarks $90 million for paying agricultural loan installments and will benefit 440,000 family farmers affected by the drought in 2014 and 2015.
