Brazil: Impeachment proceedings may end before October
Senator Raimundo Lira, head of the Senate's Special Committee on Impeachment, said this Tuesday (May 17), after a meeting with Supreme Court (STF) Chief Justice Ricardo Lewandowski, that he will present the schedule of work of the second phase of the proceedings to oust President Dilma Rousseff. At this stage, the merits of the complaint will be examined.
According to Lira, the intention is to reach the final judgment on the president before the municipal elections in October, i.e., before the 180 day-deadline after which the president may be removed. However, the schedule has not been fixed, because, according to the rite being used, for every decision of the committee, the interested parties will have five days to file an appeal challenging the decision.
"[The deadline] must not be too short and undermine the president's defense, or too long and create two problems for the country: The first is that it would coincide with the period of municipal elections; the second is that it would provoke anxiety on the society. We will not shorten [the deadline] and give the impression of haste, nor lengthen it and create difficulties for the country," said Lira.
