Brazil: Prosecutor-General accuses house speaker of crimes in state-led firm
Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot accused Lower House Speaker Eduardo Cunha of heading a criminal organization in the state-run Furnas Centrais Elétrícas, a subsidiary of Petrobras in the electric sector, investigated by Operation Car Wash. The prosecutor's conclusion is at the request to open an inquiry against Cunha, submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday (May 2).
"We know that the criminal organization is quite complex and, it seems that various schemes were operated for many years, established in Furnas and even in the Chamber of Deputies, and other public agencies. Lower House Speaker Eduardo Cunha is one of the leaders of this cell," reported Janot.
In his plea bargain testimonies, Senator Delcídio do Amaral reported that Eduardo Cunha had appointed employees working at Furnas and used applications to convene businessmen who had contracts with the state-led company. "This procedure of making applications and using parliamentary expedients is very common to Eduardo Cunha," read a section of the testimony.
Agência Brasil contacted Eduardo Cunha's advisory and still awaits response.
